Whay the Aal-e-Rasul Holds a Special Place in the Hearts of Muslims

The belief in the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is fundamental to our faith in Islam. The shahada, or the declaration of belief, necessitates we acknowledge Allah (SWT) as the One God, denying the existence of any other god, and bear witness to The Holy Prophet (SAW) being His Messenger.

The blessings of the Holy Prophet (SAW) require us as Muslims to respect and honor not just his person but also those around him, including his companions and his family. The descendants of the Holy Prophet (SWT) hold a special place for Muslims. They are to be remembered, honored and loved because they are his progeny.

The Reverence for the Holy Prophet (SAW)

The Holy Prophet (SAW) was unique among all the Messengers (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) of Allah (SWT) as he was the last prophet. He has been called the seal of Prophets by Allah in the following verse of the Quran:

“Muhammad is not the father of any man among you, but a messenger of God, and the seal of the prophets. God has knowledge of everything.”

He was the only prophet given the title of Rehmatul-lil-Alameen, which means ‘mercy for the worlds.’ The Holy Prophet (SAW) went through countless trials and tribulations for the responsibility he had been ordained by Allah (SWT). He and his followers were continuously persecuted for years and even driven out of their homes. He even endured personal attacks, violence, and a serious threat to his life.

Our Holy Prophet (SAW) suffered for the sake of all Muslims. He spread the light of Islam at a great personal cost. This is the reason why he is revered above any other prophet. Muslims cannot and must not tolerate any kind of disrespect towards our Holy Prophet (SAW). He sacrificed too much for us and this is the least we can do to show our gratitude towards him.

Who are the Aal-e-Rasul?

Aal-e-Rasul refers to the family and the descendants of the Holy Prophet (SAW), all the people to him through marriage or blood. This includes all the wives (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا) of the holy Prophet (SAW), also known as the umm-ul-mumineen, the mothers of the faithful, and all his children.

Even though the Holy Prophet (SAW) had multiple wives, the only ones who bore any children were Hazrat Khadija (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا) and Hazrat Maria Qibtia (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا). While the Holy Prophet (SAW)’s sons, one from each of the wives mentioned, did not survive past infancy, he did have four daughters.

His four daughters were; Hazrat Zainab (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا), Hazrat Umm Kulthum (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا), Hazrat Ruqqaya (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا), and Hazrat Fatima (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا). Additionally, of these four daughters, only two had children.

Hazrat Zainab (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا) was the eldest and she gave birth to a son and a daughter, of whom only the daughter survived past infancy, her name was Hazrat Umama (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا). Hazrat Fatima (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا) was married to Hazrat Ali (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) and this union resulted in the birth of five children. These include; Hazrat Hassan (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ), Hazrat Hussain (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ), Hazrat Mohsin (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ), Hazrat Zainab (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا), and Hazrat Umm-e-Kulthum (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا). All the descendants are from the two daughters of the Holy prophet (SAW). And each one of the descendant, who can truly trace their lineage back to the Holy Prophet (SAW) is part of the aal-e-Rasul.

Significance of the Aal-e-Rasul

The household of the Holy Prophet (SAW) is held in high regard due to several reasons. These include:

·       Closeness with the Holy Prophet (SAW)

Every member of the Holy Prophet’s (SAW) household must be respected because they are directly related to him. While many of the companions of the Holy Prophet (SAW) accomplished a lot for Islam and for furthering the message, the place his family holds is unparalleled.

·       Sacrifices for the Sake of Islam

Aal-el-Rasul suffered alongside the Holy Prophet (SAW) and the early converts. The family of the Holy Prophet (SAW) were, in fact, among the early believers and dealt with the consequences of the same. His daughters, who were married to the sons of Abu Lahab, were divorced when Surah Lahab was revealed. Even Hazrat Abu Talib, who did not convert but was a supporter of the Holy Prophet (SAW), had to bear great hardships.

The entire tribe of the Holy Prophet (SAW), Banu Hashim, was exiled from Makkah for three years. Hazrat Khadija (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا) spent her wealth in the service of Islam. Throughout his mission, his family remained his staunchest supporters. They provided a support system that kept the Holy Prophet (SAW) going steadfastly on his mission.

·       Transmission of Sunnah

The Holy Prophet (SAW)’s family and descendants were the most prolific and authentic sources of Hadith and Sunnah. They best knew the nature and mannerisms of the Holy Prophet (SAW) and the words he spoke.

Had it not been for the aal-e-Rasul we would not have the exceptionally detailed insights into the life and personality of our beloved Prophet (SAW). Today we know how he ate, slept, sat, and talked because of those closest to him.

·       Preserving the Legacy

The descendants of the Holy Prophet (SAW) distinguished themselves by preserving his legacy. The sacrifices of Hazrat Hassan (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) and Hazrat Hussain (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) cannot be forgotten in striving and embracing martyrdom for the sake of Islam. The role of Hazrat Zainab (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهَا) is also worth mentioning because, without her, the true events of Karbala would not have survived.

Honoring Aal-e-Rasul

The love for the Holy Prophet (SAW) must extend to his family and descendants because they played a pivotal role in forwarding his mission. The household of our Holy Prophet (SAW) is blessed by Allah (SWT). They are individuals of the highest esteem.

Every time we pray the Darood, we glorify not just the Holy prophet (SAW) but also his family as it goes:

“O Allah, bestow Your favor on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad as You have bestowed Your favor on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You have blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim, You are Praiseworthy, Most Glorious.”

Our reverence and love for the aal-e-Rasul must never falter, as they are the inheritors and guardians of the Holy Prophet’s (SAW) noble mission. They deserve our respect for all their sufferings and hardships.
